Carbaryl (1-naphthyl methyl carbamate) is one of the three most commonly used insecticides in the United States with an estimated annual use of between 10 and 15 million pounds.3 ... It is a broad-spectrum insecticide and is registered for use on more than 100 different crops, animals, ornamental plants, and indoor areas.4 ... It has been registered in the U.S. since 1958.4 Previously manufactured by Union Carbide,7 the primary U.S. manufacturer is now Rhone Poulenc Agricultural Company; many of its carbaryl-containing products are marketed under the brand name Sevin.8

Carbaryl's extensive and varied uses account for the frequent occurrence of residues on food. In addition, though carbaryl is generally thought to have "short term residual properties,"3 under certain conditions it can be persistent. For example, carbaryl sprayed on bean leaves at least ten hours before rainfall was washed away slowly and "never attained 100 percent dissipation."4 Chickens treated for mites with a carbaryl dip laid eggs with carbaryl residues for 56 days after treatment

please do tell me your thoughts...because i have used sevin dust on my birds along with de..from my understanding they were safe to use....well sounds like NOT REALLY....some of the stuff you read is down right shocking

i think your talking about the dust....maybe...if so...i never thought that is was that bad...considering that most of our crops in the united states is sprayed with the chemical....and then you read about it....and ask yourself how in the world is this safe to consume on veggies ....let alone....a 56 withdrawl time with chickens...yikes...makes me not wanna use the product ever again...

It is such a miniscule amount that is sprayed over crops that it is not harmful, and even then by the time the crops are harvested most has been biodegraded.

The biggest bummer about 7 is that it kills bees....I'm sure some other insecticides do too.

I avoid using chemicals, definitely don't use them as a prophylactic preventative,

that just screws up the predator/pest balance in great favor of the pests, creating out of control infestations,

..........tho not sure I wouldn't if I had an infestation in the flock/coop.

Got my first fence post up! It's a little less than two feet in the ground. I dug the hole with the shovel because I want to be a pioneer woman! And also I don't know how to use the tools. Taking a break for lunch, then if it's not raining I'll do the next. If it is raining, I'll probably quilt.

Get this shovel from fiskars.

Wider spade solid steel fairly light. lifetime warrenty. And this is a serious Warranty. I split one shovel straight up the spade and they sent me a new one after a quick photo and email. Didn't even want the old one. A friend welded it and now I have two. :) I seriously dig a lot and this is the best shovel I've ever owned.
