Recently been battling fowl pox. The weather is so off here. Super wet & warm. One chicken had a spot on her waddle. Next day she has both eyes shut, and another spot. The spots look like warts. Upon seeing her 1st spot, I put her in an isolation cage.

Having over 100 chickens, the normal treatments are not feasible. I don't vaccinate my birds & therefore they are suceptible, but my flock has very strong genes. The treatment I chose is putting bleach in the water. I put about 3 capfuls in each water receticle (plastic coffee containers). The 1st night of treatment, I didn't sleep. I worried that I was somehow poisoning the birds.

The way fowl pox works (dry form) is the chicken develops what looks like a sore, or wart. It heals over, falls off, another chicken eats it, that chicken is then infected. It's my understanding they can develop wet form this way as well and the wet form can be deadly.

Been treating them for about 2 weeks. Had at least 10 of them isolated due to temporary blindness, or leaking pus out of eye area. They are doing much better now. Today is clean the coop again day, but when they are free ranging, there is standing water everywhere. Like swampland but worse. Ugh. Just thought I'd share our experience in case this bad experience happens to anyone else.

On the upside, had a wonderful Christmas! 19 people here eating, talking, laughing. What a great day:)

I should add that many more than 10 have been affected by the fowl pox. Just isolated the worst of the group. Some have shown no signs.......yet.

Hi birdman, sorry to read that you spent Christmas alone. I see from your post that you have been struggling and have had to get rid of most of your birds. I don't know the reason why but I am so sorry. When we first starting chatting you were adding new birds daily, so to hear that you've had to get rid of many is very sad. I'm praying the New Year will bring better times in your life. :hugs

Sorry to hear about your Christmas. I got kicked out of my family dinner for calling out an aunt on her grossly inappropriate behaviour. Sometimes, it feels like the universe is just smacking you with the unlucky stick more than usual. I hope 2016 is better for you than 2015. :)
