building paradise for the birds

Happy memorial day, hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday as we honor are fallen solders.

Not much action on the farm here. But the other day as i was washing dishes, i happened to look up noticed that the cemani roo was out free ranging. Umm what, wait why is he out. Thinking i forget to close the door or that the dogs nudged it opened, nope this roo was an escape artist. He had dug through the dirt of the green house and squeezed right under the Crack and was a free roo. I had to board up the hole so that the two ladies didn't get the same idea and sneak out. I let him free range for a bit but had to catch him before he got himself or myself in trouble.

Set the last full tray of phesant eggs for the season since i am trying not to overwhelm myself and another tray of just hanas, cemani, and hmong chickens. Going to be busy this week since on Tuesday 60 chicken eggs are going into the hatcher and Friday the phesant eggs. :D

Just hatched 13 hanas, 4 hmong chickens, 6 cemani, and two calfornia hmongs. Also put phesants in the hatcher. 3 of which are peach goldens :D keeping my fingers crossed.

Hana chick camera shy, lol.

California hmongs. There are two pictures, though they both have white feathers and can total tell then apart, one has regular skin while the other from the same parents has black skin. We are no longer hatching this breed. They most definitely were crossed bred somewhere down the line.

It's hard to tell the difference between the breeds but i sure can say that the cemani by far hatch out the darkest, are more agressive, and take longer to grow. They are usually the smallest of the bunch. Will keep updating with pictures as they grow.

Hi! Been lurking for a while, but not much to say. Have a question...you said that the cemani are aggressive...which of the fibros do you think have the nicest temperaments? It will probably be a while before I add some to my flock, but will be interested eventually.

@jensownzoo
I personally like the hanas. They in general look better and are more mellow. And in agressive I mean they tend to pick on the other chicks more. Though our cemani breeding trio aren't too people friendly, they are still scared and freak out when I go out to feed and water them.

So I had some birthday hatching and all the peach golden hatch. Though one came out as a red golden so it was tagged. The other two came out as a cream/yellow golden color. One of them can't stand up though and I'm at lost at what to do. Will post up picture soon.

So yesterday as I'm collecting eggs, i look into the cemani pen and sure as hell my free range hmong roo was hanging out with the trio in their pen. He must of squeezed through the Crack and thought it was a good place to call home. So the green house door will be closed until i go get a latch, tying it shut with a string just isn't going to work anymore. This morning i spotted him walking around the green house trying to sneak in again. :lol:

Here is a peach golden. Thought they would come out more white but hoping they change color as they grow.

Pretty cute chick. I use little bungy cords on my fence and gate, which might work for your greenhouse. Sounds like your rooster is pretty determined ... lol. Thanks for the update, and hope all is going well for you.
