If you are using a plastic tub for chicks and need a heater use a germination mat for seedlings with a light above as well but put the heat mat underneath the plastic tub with newspaper in between so as not to get too hot for the youngsters.
If it gets really cold put an electric heater in the room but allow for so,e ventilation so they don't overheat.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you're here!

That's a great idea. I had a plywood brooder box on the garage floor recently, and I was having a hard time getting the temperature high enough (because the concrete is relatively cold this time a year). I finally put some styrofoam under the box, and that helped insulate it where I was losing the hear. But your idea for a germination mat seems like it would really help provide nice even heat. Thanks!

G’Day from down under chickeechichi :frow Welcome!

I have not used a brooder; only having hatches under a broody hen but you might want to also check out the Mama Heating Pad:

I screwed germation mats to the underside of some siding, attaching legs of different heights to each, so the birds can choose the best height and temp for themselves.

The germinatin mats raise temps by about 10 to 15 degress.

My expensive rentacoop plate brooder raises temps at on ned by 10 degrees and 15 degrees at the end near the power cord. NOT a good investment. Mats actually work better.
