buildup of poo on chick

Its poo is building up on it's rear... shoudl i try to clean it off? how should i go about this? i think it might be blocking its hole.

It is called pasty butt and you will need to clean its little tushie or it will die.

Either take a paper towel wet down with warm water and use that to rub the poop off. It is it really caked on it may be easier to soak it off in a bowl of warm water. I hold the chick in my hand and hold it in the water with its head up of course. The poop will soften and you can gently pull it off. It helps to trim up the fuzz around the vent to help keep the poop at a minimum. Some people baste their little heinies with oil to help keep the poop off as well.

Yes, clean is as best you can and very carefully. Search Pasty Butt in the search function and you'll find all kinds of advice. The poo can really cement on there, and you don't want to rub the skin or pull any down out around it's vent. I've read of people running their bottoms under a trickle of warm water, or using a warm, wet washcloth to loosen/soften the poo. Make sure you dry your chick off (people use hair dryers on low and other methods) because you don't want it to get cold.

Once clean, you can dab a tiny amount of veg or olive oil on it's vent to help keep the poo from sticking. And try adding a little apple cider vinegar to the chick water as a preventative measure.
