Bulging anus

DON'T put sugar in the water after the first day--it will GIVE them pasty butt. Just nice fresh clean water. If the others are bothering him, you can make a little semi-circle of hardware cloth in a corner of the brooder, with his own food and water, and a bit of the light so he can choose warm or cooler areas. That way he can heal but not be lonely.

Goddess please don't think I was questioning your method, I can't possibly read everything there is out there. Though I do read alot. I am curious though if anyone who posted here ever cured this? Honey by the way would make sense as it's a natural anticeptic.

They only had sugar water the first day, they've been on plain water since. They get medicated chick starter and we were letting them eat oatmeal out of our hands once a day, but I can stop that if you think it's not good for them.

I searched for vent prolapse on here and that sounds like what it has (I'm not sure if it's a male or female, it's only 2 weeks old and it's a polish so it's got a big fluff head). Is that possible in a chick? It seems like something that happens in layers.

Well anyway, I'm going to get some preparation h tonight and another heat lamp so I can isolate him for a couple days and see how he does.

Other than the scabby butt he seems fine, he's just as energetic as the others, he's not lethargic or anything. (He does seem to start to fall asleep when I have him wrapped up in hand towel after soaking his bottom in warm water!)

No.. Not at all... I am no expert by any means.. I learn something new about chickens every single day.. I have been on this site for about a year now and I am the type of person who researches *everything* I am interested in.. When I think I've done enough reading, I read more.. lol As for curing it, yes, there have been many on here who with prep h, a warm quiet place, fresh food and water and a lot of time and tlc, have cured prolapse in their birds.. Albeit, there are some on here who didn't.. It's like anything else.. Some things work and some don't.. But, it's worth a try.. It may make it better and it definitely won't make it worse..

As for me posting those threads, I did not feel you were challenging me and I apologize if i came across that way.. I was just trying to back my information up as you asked...

I read these posts in case I need them but hope I never do. Thing is you can go to the coop in the morning things are fine and then in the afternoon things aren't going so well. You know what I mean?

Oh most definitely! I just had that happen a few days ago.. And thanks to this board, I was able to save my rooster's life! This board is awesome!

Katie... Please let us know how the baby is doing.. Besides treating the illness itself, it's just as important to make sure the little one is eating and drinking.. The more it eats and drinks, the more strength it will have to heal..

Well I got the preparation h so I hope that helps. I made sure to get it inside the vent since I know that's important to getting the medication to work, though I'm sure it wasn't pleasant for either of us

He seems to be eating and drinking well and seems as energetic as the rest, but his poor bottom, uggh. I can gently push his vent back in, but then it pulsates and pops right back out. Is that probably because of the swelling? i hope the medication can reduce the swelling so his vent can get back to where it belongs, I know even though it's not a full prolapse it still opens him up to infection (or her, I can't tell!)

Thanks!

If I can figure out how to post pictures I'll try to get one up so you have a better idea of what's going on!

S/he look much better after two applications of the preparation h! it's still bulging but it isn't getting the nasty bloody scab, and it isn't nearly as swollen as it was. So hopefully it will keep getting better
