does anyone know what I can add to standard 20/24% chick starter to increase the protein level to somewhere around the 28% range? I was thinking something like fishmeal, but I have really no idea where I can get it.
I found that the local co-op will order fishmeal at $38/50# bag and it is 62%.
I could go with soybean meal, however. A farm supply place near here carries that at $11/50# bag and it is 46%.
With the fishmeal, I would only have to add 2 parts per 17 to get the 28% I need. With the soybean, I have to add a wopping 1 part to 4. I would be using it up a LOT faster, but it is so much cheaper a bag. I think I would end up spending about the same, or a little more with the soybean meal, though.
I only wanna use it to convert chick starter into turkey starter.
If I had to chose between fish and soy, I'd go fish. Animal proteins are often lacking in feeds, and I think they are good for birds as they are omnivores. Others prefer not to feed animal protein though, so do what you prefer as there is no one right way.
