I went out to the barn Saturday to find my turkey not using her left leg. She just lets it hang. When I mess with her leg she will pull on it and take like a deep breath. I am wondering if I alleviate the pain if she will start using her leg. What can I give her to help with pain? She seems to have no other problems.

I have looked all over and do not see exactly what hurts. Nothing seems out of the ordinary.

She was with a tom. I removed her for now.

It is not uncommon for a tom to cause hip damage or a wound between the leg and ribs because of a rough or forced breeding attempt.

Turkeys are very resilient. I would keep her away from the tom and see how she does in the next couple of days. Most of the time they heal without any other help.

About how many days should I wait to see if she will start walking around again. She stands up and flops around right now.

You may want to examine her hip area gently but thoroughly. The other thing that you can try is to build a sling for her so she can stand without putting pressure on the leg. There are threads in the Emergencies forum that talk about building a sling.

If there is not serious damage, she should show slight improvement on a day to day basis. Depending on how severe the injury is, she may always hobble around.
