When it rains, it pours.. I have so many issues going on with my normally healthy chickens 😖 I always turn to this site for help.
My buff Orpington has been having pain when she walks. She has very mild swelling between the middle and outside toes on both feet. She had bumble foot scabs, I soaked and removed about two weeks ago and they seemed to heal fine. She was doing better and then today I noticed she was limping again. So I checked her feet and the scabs were back. I soaked them, removed the scabs but healthy tissue was underneath (see pictures). She still has very mild swelling in between those two toes on both feet. I’m not sure if this is what is causing her pain. If it is the bumble foot- her foot looks good overall and I’m not sure if the infection has moved to be between the toes. If it has how do I get that to heal? I’ve seen advice to use a drawing salve but I’m not sure if that would work? Or could it be from something else causing the pain- arthritis?? She’s a healthy weight. She doesn’t like to jump off the roost (even before she started limping) and I carry her off every morning. She’s 2 years old.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Hoping to get some advice, help with this please.

Also, sorry there are so many duplicates of the pictures. They weren’t showing as uploaded and then when I posted they were all there.

Did you make sure to get the kernel out when you removed the scab? If the kernel is stuck in there, there is likely infection under that healthy tissue. I know some people have lanced the swollen area and removed the pus that way. Does the swelling feel squishy or hard?

That doesn't look bad at all. If there is still swelling that's causing her to limp, I'd just continue to soak. Maybe apply some prid and wrap to help draw out anything that can be drawn out.
It could be arthritis causing her limping as well. I have a duck with a chronic limp, but with no other issues. I supplement her with a joint supplement that I give to my dogs that has green mussel.
But, something I read recently is the bigger hens generally get bumblefoot more often than the smaller ones. Probably due to weight.

Also, you can give her a pain med. You can use watered down aspirin (the solution is posted here on byc or in an online search) or baby aspirin. You can also look for joint supplements for birds (what parrot and cockatiel owners use).

If it were me, I'd continue the soaks in iodine water, wrap with prid, leave it for a few days and then repeat. The prid or other drawing salve will continue to bring to surface anything that needs drawn out.

Yes, I was able to get everything out the first time. The swelling is very little but it feels squishy.

Thank you! I’ll give this a go and hopefully she’ll be on the mend soon. If not, I’m thinking it might be arthritis. Thank you for the advice with the joint supplement and asprin!

If it feels squishy, probably notthing to worry about as far as bumblefoot goes. You could isolate her see if that helps, with the limp. She could d have landed wrong. Or just keep an eye on her. Sometimes these things resolve on their own.

Squishy is fine. Bumbles are hard. If you want get a cotton pad soaked with iodine and sugar. Put it on the affected area and keep it wrapped for a day or two then check it. What that does is it pulls any infection left out to the surface where you can easily remove it. Also try a poultice of plantain. It will soothe as well as pull out any infection. Try to keep their pen or run reasonably dry with hay or shavings, etc. Too much moisture can cause bumblefoot as well as splinters and cuts.
