Bumble foot or weird calluses.

I too am ashamed to admit that I only just today noticed that my Pekin was limping and checked her feet to find a black scab that's about the size of a nickel; her other foot has a MUCH smaller black scab as well.

I went to the drug store and got some Epsom Salt and bandages but was late for a class and couldn't begin treatments.

I have a space sectioned off that is adjacent to the made run, but isn't used by any of my birds, I'm guessing I should sequester her in there during treatment, but for how long?
Do I need to cut into her foot, or will the Epsom Salt soak (bathtub swim while the wife is out) and some iodine take car of things?
Do I need to remove the scabs each day?
Do I need to bandage the feet? How do I bandage duck feet?

I want to keep her healthy, but I can't afford a vet bill right now.

You can start with Epsom salt soak followed with clear iodine. No cutting. Give the clear iodine three to five days to work. Soak again, see if the scab will loosen so you can pull a plug of infected material out. A clean space with bedding, food and fresh water should be all she needs.

I know this is a very old thread, but @lilmizscareall , did you ever discover what happened? I have a duck going through something exactly like what you’ve mentioned...

We have discussed everything from dry/cracked skin, to cut from something in the yard. We are confident in saying it’s not bumblefoot, so it’s nice to see someone (unfortunately) who has gone through the same scenario.

I hope your duck did recover from this!

Hi LAllen! I too am chipping in on the old thread with the same question about my cayugas (at the tips of their toes). Did you ever identify the cause or have much of an issue with this?

I noticed a similar thing occurring on my Cayuga hens. One has a weird almost warty like growth on the pads of her feet, I asked around and tried to look it up and was told it was bumblefoot. I'm really hoping that it's not but I will be doing Epsom salt baths and iodine. A vet recommended using Colloidal Silver in a spray or gel form to help get rid of any infection.

Were you able to figure out what it was? I am having a similar issue with my new ducklings.

Same, I'm very worried about a couple of mine. I don't know what to do. I currently have the worst one's feet wrapped. I applied honey, so I'll see if that helps. I'll let ya'll know how it goes if you want. I know this is an old thread, I was just searching for similar issues and came across it. I already lost one to complications from this. :(
