Bumble foot

My Jersey Blue has bumblefoot on both feet. I read several threads on this site and watched two videos on how to remove the "kernel". Both videos showed very docile chickens that did not appear to be bothered by the infection being cut out. I soaked her feet in a warm epsom salt bath. When I removed her, I covered her head with a towel and laid her on her side. Already, that did not go so well. She did not want to be on her side and kept fighting to stand up. Once I finally got her relaxed on her side, I proceeded to cut at the black spot. Her toes were curling up and she kept jerking her leg and jumped up to standing twice. Each time I got her back on her side after a fight. I finally gave up and put neosporine on and wrapped it with vet tape. Were the videos misleading? Do most chickens just lie there and let you cut into their foot?

It depends on the personality of the chicken or if they are used to having bumblefoot.

You don’t need to cut it. After soaking you should be able to pick it off like a scab.

I sure hope you have some baby aspirin to give her at least!

You could have someone help hold it or put a towel over the head

thank you for your replies. I had a towel over head the first time, but tried it again with a neighbor's help. We had much better success. thank you!
