Hello
Last year my neighbor across the road decided to get chickens and he didnt just get a few he went chicken crazy he bought every cheep chicken at every lifestock auction he went to and they always came over to my house. They all looked ok execept for one hen that had what I think was bumble foot. I told one of my friends who has had chickens for years and she said the chances that my birds will get it from his birds is slim to none and that was a relief I have never had any major problems with my birds and I wanted to keep it that way. Well yesterday I noticed one of my hens was walking funny and I looked closer and noticed that she had a bubble in the web part between her toes. I cought her, and saw it has a scab in the center and she has another on the bottom of her foot I think she has bumble foot so now what do I do I dont know anything about it please help me I dont know what to do. I did what I always do when someone is sick I put her in a cage away from everyone else and I dont yet know who else has it.
What do I do next?
What is bumble foot, what causes it?
How do they get it and how dose it spread?
How do I treat it, what meds do I use?
How do I get rid of it or will I always have it around?
What animals can get it?

firsat your chicken did not catch bumble foot from the neighbord chickens
BUT SHE DID IT HER SELF fell off roost and came down on a rock or and stone or hard clod of dirt
questions

What do I do next?

ANSWER
you need to doctor the foot or feet
by taking and soaking the chickens feet in very warm water with epsom salts
say 4 tbsp of Epsom salts to 1 qt of warm water
hold chicken in it for at least 15 minutes and then stand her on the table and dry the top of the feet off

take and turn her upside down and take a razor blade dipped in alchol and cut the top off the puncture wound part

thern squeeze out the pus and then clean with pure Iodine
by pouring it all over the chickens toes and spot

then put some neosporum on it liberally, MAKE SURE IT IS A LOT AS THIS STAYS ON FOR TWO DAYS

and put wrapping of old rags torn into 1-1/2 inch width and wrap good
now take a old sock and use gray tape and tape it to the chickens leg

do this with the other foot
after tAPING BOTH OF HER FEET OVER THE RAGS
PUT HER IN A PRIVATE CAGE SO NO OTHER CHICKENS CAN HURT HER
OR GET THE RAGS AND BANDAGE OFF HER FEET GLH

What is bumble foot, what causes it?
ANSWER
it is a vruise of the feet pads from hitting hard surface with her weight coming down on the soft part of her foot.GLH

How do they get it and how dose it spread?
ANSWER
from hitting the hard object with the soft part of the foot
It does not spread
it is a simple bruise that gets infection in the pad of the foot and makes pus in the core of the bruise GLH

How do I treat it, what meds do I use?

ANSWER
I gave the treatment do so for at least 10 days and see how it looks by then
does it have a good scab on it?
Also I would then keeo her penned seperate for 6 weeks as she will need to heal the wound good
then she can go out again

take her back at night and rub her feathers on the other hens at least three as they go by smell
this step is very important when getting a strange bird affiliated with the flock
they do go on smells

go out early with treats and let them out as a group
the treats keep them occupied as she becomes social

How do I get rid of it or will I always have it around?
What animals can get it? Simone

ANSWER
it is just that way and is not catching but needs your observation of the landing area chickens have from the roots

this is just nature and is one of the bad things that happen
ACTUALLY think avout this
a chicken of 4 lbs landing on a couple of spindle legs which have soft pads on the foot

just is simple hard object collides with soft pads
I always had some of the soft ground uder the roosts on my chicken house
my roosts were stair steps and soft earth at the bottome area of last roost

After I posted my questions I did some reserch on the internet and found out it wasnt as bad as I thought it was, it' just in the 10 years I have had chickens I have never seen it in person until last year only photos and I was worried. Going on 3 years ago I moved into this house and had all kinds of problems (I think the house is cursed) Two years ago I lost a LLama and most of my goats to a neighbors dog and this last winter my main breeding buck goat had an accident in the barn and I lost him(he would have been 8 this year and I have had him sence he was weaned), most of my rabbits, and several chickens died for no reason at all they just droped weight stoped eating and died the next day and everyone gets wormed on a regular basis so I know it wasnt worms. I was just really stressing over it, I am already treating birds for leg mite off and on sence last year (Ivomec and bag balm) I know they origionally cought that from the neighbor there were a couple that were iffy. I let my birds free range so it is diffacult to treat everywhere they roost because sometimes they use the rafters in the barn but I have the mites under control.

I just had a hen with this last week. I did just about what Glenda says above and she's doing great! All healed up.
