I have a three year old that was diagnosed by the vet with bumble foot. She opened the scan but could find no kernel just a lot of bleeding. She cushioned it with foam, applyed gauge and wrapped it with vet wrap. Prescribed antibiotics ( amoxicillin) and meloxicam tabs (cut in quarters) for fourteen days. After seven days I asked the vet if I could discontinue the antibiotics because her foot looked much better just a reddish scab and no swelling. She allowed me to discontinue the antibiotic but to keep it wrapped and checked. I did so and am continuing the meloxicam until 14 days are up.

From what I have read here and upon vets advice I will keep it wrapped and sprayed with Vetericyn until the scab falls off. Here is my main question : how long do I need to discard eggs when discontinuing amoxicillin? I. Have found so many varying time limits on the internet, and thus far my vet has not gotten back with me. Yesterday there were three eggs in the nest and we had to discard them all due to i certainty. I am getting pretty paranoid about this.. any suggestions? Does it really do a lot of harm if I eat one of her eggs a accidentally?

There is a two week egg withdrawal for antibiotics. The reason for it is to prevent unnecessary exposure to antibiotics, causing resistance that renders the antibiotic less effective over time. So no, no real harm will befall you if you accidentally eat one of her eggs before the withdrawal period is up.

Thanks for your reply. I just re-managed her foot this morning and I don’t see any improvement really. She has been off the anabiotic for five days after being on it for seven days and she still on meloxicam I have re-bandaged her foot and sprayed it with veteran Twice so far and I don’t see any improvement. I will post a picture if I could figure out how I think if I send a photo to the vet, she’s going to have me put her back on antibiotics and I wonder if there’s an easier way to administer them because it’s been such a fight with her .

Is the Amoxicillan liquid or tablets?

When giving liquid meds I take a small piece of bread and let it absorb the medicine and compact it into a oblong shape. If the meds are nasty tasting I smear a little canned cat food on the outside. most every time my girls will eat it right out of my hand.

Using a pill crusher you can do the same basic thing. Just make sure the powder doesn't fall out.

Or, I have gotten reall good at tucking them under my arm, using my left thumbnail to get the beak open and be ready with the right hand to pop the pill in. I use my finger to push it as far back in the beak as possible and then I don't let them drop their head until it's swallowed.

Obviously if you're left handed then reverse the directions. ;)

It's easiest to do this early morning before they get up or at night after they roost unless you have her in a separate cage.

I'm going to suggest that you try something you've probably never heard of. Inexpensive, safe, and easy to do. I would clean that up as well as you can, apply sugardine (links below with more on that) every day, and wrap the foot. I've had very good results with it on some really bad and really stubborn bumblefoot cases.
This is a thread where I explain what I did, and it includes a video on sugardine by a veterinarian, see post #8 here:
