I did a search and couldn't find anything very detailed on the subject. i pulled the plug and gauzed it, but dh said he thinks I will have to lance the entire foot to make sure to get it all out. He said it can run deep. I have never had anything to get it before so it is new to me. I discovered her foot swollen about a month ago but with the new job, moving and my dad passing, I just haven't felt like messing with her. I did find a link on lancing it for chickens, but I would rather have someone experienced to speak to if I have any questions. The plug was about 3/8 of an inch wide and about an inch long. From there I found blood. There was also a "sleeve" that came out with it that was still attached to the pad of her foot and i trimmed it off.

Treatment is the same for a turk as for chook, though more `mechanically' challenging. As you've gotten the plug out (good job!) there is a good possibility this will resolve with continued change of dressings (if she is on sand or grass and not mud you could probably do this once every three days or so - the standard rec. is to keep the bird on soft, clean bedding with no opportunity to fly (actually, the problem is landing...).

If you have a vet or doc that you know well you might try to get them to write for a script of Cephalexin (cheap/effective antibiotic) 250mg bid. Dump the powder out of capsules and daub up with grapes, or other sticky treat.

Hope she gets better!
