We recieved 18 new Chicks from Ideal on Friday Morning-- everyone was perky, happy etc...ate their grow-gel and are on quick-chick in their water and chick starter feed. They have a heat lamp and aren't cold-- since they do not huddle at all.

Last night (Saturday) one of the little buff rocks started chirping really loudly non-stop...holding her wings down at a funny angle and stumbling around. If you pick her up-- she stops and goes to sleep--but starts again as soon as you put her down.

At 1st, thought she was just "crying for mamma" as she seems quite spoilt allready.... but now she seems to shudder and stumble more.... and sometimes shudders while held.

she is eating, and moving around... just stumbly and crying. She also stops every couple minutes to frantically preen her legs/wings on one side then the other...then back to crying. She was starting to get pasty butt, but we cleaned her up.

Any Ideas????
I just hope she didn't get injured in shipping and have brain damage or leg problems... and just want to help her be comfortable and happy.

cant "diagnose" this for you but try giving Polyvisol Enfamil formulation (this is a childrens liquid A-B-D vitamin) >three drops in beak once a day for a week then taper off the next. Separate the chick as the other will either bully it away from the feed and drink or else it will simply not have the energy nor inclination to fight for its place to get to it. wont hurt and might very well get it back on its feet.

Even when I had the brooder temperature at what was reccomended my chicks wanted to huddle somewhat.

Could your temperature be a little high?

Did all the chicks drink when you first put them in the brooder? My first batch of chicks I did not ensure that they all drank and I lost quite a few. My second batch I made sure each one drank when I put it in the brooder and did not lose any.

Is the chick eating and drinking?

Their water has "quick-chick" electrolytes and poly-vi-sol vitamins in it--- and the "cryer" is eating and drinking fine, and not quite as stumbly as before-- but still holding her wings funny and crying all the time.

Soon as you pick her up-- "ZONK" out she goes...sleeping peacfully till you put her down!

Starting to think maybe she's just a crybaby who needs more "mothering" than the others....?

Whenever I have had a loud crying chick, it turned out they were not getting the water/hydration they needed. Keep an eye on her that she does not get dehydrated, it happens fast and kills fast. Does she feel lighter than the rest when you pick her up?

I suggest dipping her beak in her water at different times, even though you think she is drinking. Also, I would give a drop of poly vi sol right into the beak even though you have some in the water. Good luck, keep us updated.

UPDATE: She kept getting pasty butt-- now we know why-- her vent protrudes from her rump and the opening points down... so whenever she poo's, it goes right onto her.

What should I do about the vent? I put a bit of vaseline on it after cleaning her up-- but I didn't want to try TOO hard to put it back in....

Any suggenstions?
