Hello,

I am new to the site but not new to raising chickens. We have had our chickens for almost 3.5 years. We started with 6 and now only have 4. We have had chickens get broody and figured out how to overcome that. We have a chicken that lays eggs with weak shells which usually end up broken. We have a couple of chickens that lay eggs with large bumps on the outside of the shell, that resemble a wart!!!

I would like to know what is causing these bumps. We do not supplement with calcium as there is calcium in the feed.

Welcome to BYC!

Just because there is calcium in there feed means its enough.Layings hen should have Oyster shells available all year round.

Yeah, something like this, 20170722_180918.jpg . That happens occasionally ,though this is bigger than usual.
I feed a layers feed also, but I have a hen that will lay soft shelled or thin shelled eggs, if I don't offer oyster shell in a separate container. She was last to lay and laid many soft shelled eggs in the beginning, till I offered oyster shell. I believe she has trouble absorbing calcium, or possibly a glitch in her system.
But if they don't eat enough layers feed, because you offer a lot of treats like scratch grains or kitchen scraps, or because she is at the bottom of the pecking order. They/she may not get the calcium needed. Then I would offer oyster shell in a separate container. GC
