Bunch of eggs, overwhelmed and no clue

I have no experience with geese eggs but Im guessing you can candle them ... but these haven't started yet have they - I just know its a big worry when its all up to you to monitor the temp and humidity ect - its a big commitment.

I was so relieved when I was able to put mine into a real incubator ... first night sleep I got in quite a few days, and I only had 2 chicken eggs for the last for 4 of incubation.

I really have no clue what I'm doing or how to tell if they are alive or just nicely rounded rocks lol

I found a styrofoam cooler and put a light inside with a thermometer. I'll see how high the temp gets and lower the bulb wattage and take more notes. If I can balance the heat source with the amount of heat that is escaping, I think I can keep it fairly steady.

Hmm... I just thought of something. I have a variable AC power thingy that can vary the power from 0 to 100%. I could put an incandescent light bulb in there and vary the power until the temp is just right. I'm going to do that now.

So I put 5 eggs into my homemade incubator a week ago. The geese and ducks were taking turns sitting on the rest until yesterday when I found all the eggs laying on the ground in front of the doghouse. Yup, I didn't think they could see it through. So gathered up 17 eggs and put them into the incubator too. Except for one egg that didn't have anything in it. I put it in the fridge. It will be a miracle if anything comes out of this batch.

Awesome! Keep us updated on how it turns out! At least you know you tried! Hopefully, a few will hatch out!

How is everything going ?

Not so great :( I can only keep my makeshift incubator between 98 and 102 and I can't seem to turn the eggs more than once or twice a day. A few days ago I had 2 eggs that were slushy sounding inside, so I busted them over a rock and yup, cottage cheese looking. Then last night the light came unplugged for a few hours and the temp got down to 72. The eggs were ice cold. I got the temp back up as fast as I could, but I think, overall, I'm just not determined enough to do this. Too many things have gone wrong, so my optimism is diminishing which each day. And those 2 rotten eggs that were in there made the whole thing stink, so I'm even less inclined to deal with it.

I'm so sorry to hear ... but keep going there maybe a little life that is depending on you. Have you candled yet if I'm counting right, and I often don't ... you're at around day 15 ?

I only had a week of nursing my eggs to hatch day, but I can tell you I lost confidence when I lost my first one .... but then the magic happened, that internal peep-peep ... it truly is magical.

Sending you luck and strength vibes ....

Thanks!

I can't tell what I'm looking at when I candle them. They look like boiled eggs to me.... mostly solid with a hollow spot at the top of the egg. One egg is different... it looks solid on one side and the rest looks hollow.

It looks like I started this thread over a month ago and had 6 eggs back then. More came later, but I think most are close to a month old.

Maybe post a new thread looking for advice on candling goose eggs ... I know as a last resort you can float eggs in very warm water ... if they are far enough along and of course alive they rock and roll with movement from the chick inside. Thats how I picked what ones to keep. I didnt candle ... wish I had as I missed 2 eggs that may have gone on ... but it was very interesting seeing the eggs move in the warm water.

That's a good idea. When can I expect movement if I put them in water? How many days along would they have to be?

I found 2 more goose eggs today, so I put them into the incubator. Also found another that was slushy, so I threw it out.
