They don't need that big bulb..
They don't normally need heat at all.
BUT because you have gotten them used to the heat, you need to ween them off it.
get a smaller bulb...

REALLY get the 100 watt yellow buglite or the 85 watt red bulb at walmart...

good luck

OK MD I will begin the weening process LOL the new ones arnt getting burned the light is outside the wire on there crate.

Henry, at the risk of sounding like a boring stodgy adult telling you to be boringly safe, PLEASE never again put a high wattage or heat bulb in a low wattage fixture like a desk lamp. Your desk lamp should say (probably inside the 'shade') how many watts it is designed for.

Putting a higher wattage bulb in there creates a serious risk of fire from the parts of the lamp getting too hot. Even tho you have no coop as such to worry about burning down, your tractor can most certainly be set on fire.

Not only would you feel really bad if you carelessly roasted or smoked your chickens, I suspect it would NOT help you convince your mom to get behind your expanding the tractor or building a coop. Furthermore if you do not get in the habit of doing things safely your career as a sustainable farmer is likely to be REAL short.

PLEASE don't do that, huh?

End of public safeyt announcement,

Pat

THE LIGHTS ARE GONE I tottaly understand Patandchicken Thanks for the good advice. THe chickens should be fine they are just having a few problems finding the roosts.
