I've been a member of BYC for a while now, just haven't taken the time to introduce myself...
My family and I bought about 8 acres in south Texas almost 2 years ago. Lucky for us it came with a chicken coop, the previous owners raised guineas. We started out with 12 chickens and unfortunately only have two left. We had a rough learning curve when it came to predators. I have two daughters and we cried like babies every time we lost one of our chickens. (who knew that wild pigs would come into the yard in the middle of the day and get a chicken! Makes me worried about letting my kids play out there!!) The chickens truly are our family. I told my husband that I would not get anymore chickens until all precautions were taken to ensure their safety and my kids!! We now have a 7 ft tall fence around a small chicken yard outside the coop, so that they can still go outside the coop when we are not home. We have also fenced our yard, about an acre and we love to let them run free when we can watch them. Who knew that watching chickens was so much fun!!? We also have three cats, who often get chased up a tree by the chickens. And two dogs, that found us, both of which are completely chicken tolerant. We just ordered some more chickens and I am so excited to get them! I would like to thank everyone for their chicken knowledge, I find so much information out from here!
