Butcher Time - Hogs

Quote:
Weekdays I wear a dress shirt, slacks, dress shoes, and a green Carhart jacket (I own 10 suits, can't remember the last time I wore one). Weekends, old Carhart jacket, Wrangler "Ranger pants", and a pair of Cabela's goretex boots. I sometimes shock my clients when I run into them at Home Depot and I am dressed as a hick, AND I "out-hick" them. Mind you, I bank a bunch of com'l fishermen and loggers now, and it is hard to be a bigger hick than those guys.

Ya, you need a roof. But I doesn't have to be anything fancy. Just a three sided shelter is all that is needed... with a top.

I agree... just ask forgiveness or just play dumb and say "I have no idea what that is, looks like a funny looking chicken doesn't it?" Just play it cool...

DF - you shoulda seen the look on my hubby's face when he came home one day and i told him that the pig guy was coming in a hour.

he: WHAT?!
me: yep now help me with this panel
he: i thought you said SOMEDAY
me: no time like the present!

i'm telling you once they get some of that ham in them... no need convincing them anymore.

but - be extra careful if you've got kids, dont let them in the pen and for heavens sakes dont let them play with the hogs!

just do it

i made the Hog Hut out of hillbillied together pallets and a roof made of materials on hand and roofing shingles that, i kid you not, i dug out of the ground. it still stands and its still bone dry.

and get good fencing. electric.

No cured ham this time. DW has it all chunked and is getting started on canning it today. And before you think "how could you do that to the ham", you need to try some canned ham fried up in a little lard. Use the drippings to make gravy. Way better than cured/smoked ham. As for the bacon, I have the sides bagged up. I have a few recipies, just need to pick one and fire up the smoker. Can't wait to put one of those butt roasts in there too. I did a few last year, and they were fabulous.

If I had known you where free this weekend, I would have invited you down. Maybe we could have got some roofing done as well. LOL

Got a picture? I've got some pallet fencing and have been thinking about a pallet hog hut. Could use a little inspiration.

Where abouts are u at in Ohio?
My wife did find the post on SS you referenced, very nice. I wish I would have seen it before I did this. All well, it wouldn't have really taken away any of the nervousness I had about doing it. I'll tell you what, once I pulled the trigger on the first one, IT WAS ON! The only thing I was thinking about was getting it done. I guess modern man still has some survival instinct in them, because that's what seemed to kick in once that rifle cracked.

hey just a mention for hut ideas. I was out at a guys ranch the other day and he had THE BEST HUTS. He was using some for goats and some for turkeys, but I could see where they would work great for hogs too. Now remember you can't out-hick Idaho, the majority of the ancestors here arrived on foot and pushing hand carts . . . I digress, anyway; he was using fiberglass air scoops off the top of semi's - that's the thing you would see on the roof that adds to the areo dynamics of a big semi truck. He had painted his all white so they did look very nice. SOme he had down long ways to make like a cave and others up tall for shade & wind break.
I came home and asked my husband about them (he's a mechanic for semi's) and he said heck yeah, you can pick those up for free all over the place.
