Butchered 7 roosters, have a question

Quote:
We chopped the heads off. Actually my hubby did that dirty work. My stomach turned as I saw them hanging bleeding out. The easiest was plucking. Didn't realize how easy the feathers came off and it was actually relaxing. Hardest was when I was gutting, wish I had someone with me to tell me how to do the first one. It took forever for me to do the first one because I was very careful not to puncture anything. Afterwards, I knew what was inside and got a system down. We never killed any game before this. I thought I would have a problem with the feet but after they are chopped they amazingly looked just like the chicken at the store.

And now I know for next time, keep them in the fridge for a while. Thanks to you guys.

This sounds a lot like my first experience, except the thing that freaked me out the worst I think was the head blinking at me...

I've got to get the hot water dip down better - I think I was dipping them too long sometimes, had a little bit of skin tearing. Good advice from my coach, it's better to dip for a short time and have to re-dip than to over-dip and "cook" the skin!

sometimes I had the temperature of the water over 150, couldn't wait to cool it down so we just dipped real quick. It worked just fine. A little bit of skin tearing but not significant at all.

We only prepared for it the night before. We decided 8 roosters crowing starting at 4am, was not good. Did some lookup here on butchering and just did it. Also my hens weren't getting enough food because the roosters would take it all and my egg production was low.

WOW! learn something here everyday. We did 26 Cornish Rocks this year and put them straight into the freezer. We have been eating them and they seems fine. Is the idea of aging them tp help with toughness?

I agree with OhMyChickeys" the smell got to us too. I plucked them but had to put a towel over the head. Husband did thee really gross stuff - I'm such a wimp!

There's a great video on YouTube titled "Chicken Processing on Custer Family Farm" that shows an easy way to skin & clean chickens. Even if you're going to pluck, you can still use their method of cleaning out the cavity. It's the easiest way I've tried.

Thanks Sunny side up, they did it the same way I did except I plucked. I didn't know about ACV added to the water. That's a great idea. Wish I knew about it before.
