So I had some chicks with some dried poop on their butts, just bought today. I trimmed the area around the vent free from poo, but when I wiped it with water and a washcloth some of the "oh so fragile" fluff came our and now one of my chicks has a semi-bare bottom. The spot is no bigger on than a nickel (1 wk. old). Is this s problem? I was just happy I got the dried poop off.

That fluff was going to come off anyway, now the chick just needs to wait for some feathers to cover her bum.

I figured as much, never experienced playing with pooping chickens. Also, can I put some pine shaving inside the brooder? It gets messy fast with newspaper.

For the first few days use paper towels, newspaper can get very slippery when wet. This gives time for the babies to know where food is, then use the shavings.

Yes, the newspaper is really to slippery for them anyhow. I put mine on shavings for the first week then switch to the pine pellets for better (still not good) odor and dust control.

They should NOT be on newspaper! They will get spraddled leg from it. Use pine shavings with paper towels on it, you can take off the paper towels after a week.
