Hi there, I have been reading up on button quail genetics, and my head is swirling!! So many people have come up with so many names for what seems like the same phenotype (leaky and splash, for example). Out of the 9 I have hatched from Purely Poultry, I know I have a pied-wing male, a few silver male and females, a white, and at least one wild-type male and female.

I am still learning, but these three have me baffled. Thoughts? Also, I have found that a little 'photo booth' calms them down and makes photography easier.

#1: male

#2: female, "dark headed", is that right? What about her other markings? Some sort of pied or tuxedo? 20210611_124230.jpg

And #3: male, what in the heck is he?! 20210611_114655.jpg 20210611_114822.jpg 20210611_114902_HDR.jpg
(And a pic of their 'photo booth'. I'm learning so much about these adorable creatures!)

Oh, they look so different now as adults!!! I got my FIRST EGG today too! I have so so so many pictures (and questions) now!

Golden Pearl Male looks like this now:

I have read that double dose of the pearl gene will result in failed eggs. Does this apply only to golden pearls, or all pearl phenotypes? The reason I am asking is:

I have what I think is a silver pearl (is she maybe also fallow?) hen. She is getting ready to lay, I was able to feel an egg while handling her for the photos. She is giving me SUCH a stankface, haha.

The female redbreasted has already laid, I think. She is looking a bit rough though because she survived an overnight misadventure in a house with multiple cats. I found out that scared quail can in fact squeeze through the wires of a rabbit cage! 😱 I thought for sure she was dead, but she hopped out of a corner while I was watching a movie. Also, what can I do to trim her beak? And what can I add to their enclosure to keep it from growing so long? Would a cuttlebone work?

Here is the slate redbreasted lad from earlier. Is he also a pied wing? Can someone please please give me advice on the best way to hold these things? I feel like I am going to break them but they are so squirmy.

I'm including photos of the rest of the crew (I have 9 adults from Purely Poultry. Two of them look very similar to each other, with dark heads. Based on their vents, they are male. What's the name of their phenotype?

I named my favorite Jazz Hands because of the pied wing. I have been flip-flopping back and forth over whether it's male or female because of the bib, but the red ventrals probably suggest male.

The other two remaining quail are both silver males, I think, possibly with the fallow color? They had two siblings with the same hatchling color die from late-hatching eggs, and I have heard that the color has traditionally been considered delicate.

Thoughts and opinions? I appreciate all the helpful feedback so far. Thank you!
