If this is their permanent home, can you put a "window" or two in the sides? They would need to be covered in hardware cloth, but it will give them better ventilation.

We were going to but didn’t have enough rivets.

I use staples. Same way I attach hardware cloth to wood. I have to go and hammer down the ends so they don't stick out afterwards, but it works.

You could. Coturnix will stink things up faster because they're larger and poop more.
