Button Quail Food?

So I wanted to yank some weeds from my yard and give them to my button quail. Ive heard of some people giving them dirt, roots and all. I was wondering if thats safe? Could they get parasites from eating random weeds and bugs? and are there any poisonous plants out there that I should avoid (I live in Maine)?

What you describe is safe to do, but be careful that there is no possibility of toxins like pesticides and herbicides. There's little chance of parasites. To be safe of toxic plants I dig sod at the edge of my yard.
