I got 2 six week old button quail from someone who started out with 18 chicks. They were dying in groups and I got the last 2.

The original owner did some investigating and ended up thinking that the problem was the regular tap water he had been giving them. He switched to bottled water and the final 2 chicks that he gave me were the lone survivors.

I've had them a week and one of the 2 just passed away.

He was feeding them poultry starter and I weaned then over to Roudy Busch. I have been giving them filtered water.

I've had buttons from within hours of hatch in the past and never experienced this.

Any ideas? Could it be a genetic thing? He started with 20 eggs, 18 hatched and I am down to the 1 surviving 7 week old chick which seems perfectly healthy.

Can you post pictures of both feed bags and the surviving bird?

Here are pics of both bags of food along with the ingredient lists. Capturing a pic of Echo is becoming a challenge since he keeps hiding from me. I'll try to move him to a carrier cage and get a pic later after he calms down some.

The black bag...is not good enough.
Return it.

Can you call your feed store and ask them if they carry a Turkey Starter crumble?

I won't have to return it because I use it for my other birds. Roudy Bush always worked well for buttons in the past. Are you saying that the Chick Starter is wrong for them also?

I wouldn't feed either of those to my baby buttons.

Do you happen to know what that guy was feeding his birds?
He was feeding from the yellow bag. I took the advice someone on here gave and got turkey starter . . . and my one remaining button quail, Echo, is thriving. Sprite didn't make it. I couldn't stand seeing him all alone in his cage by himself so I moved him, along with my family of diamond doves into a large flight cage so he has company. Neither of us realized we were starving the poor things of protein. I've had buttons in the past from the day they were hatched but was given an ample supply of starter food from the breeder. I transitioned them over to Roudy Bush at around 6 months and they all loved 2 1/2 - 3 years. So sad. We were both trying our best.
