A 6 month old button quail hen is about to lay an egg and is twisting her neck and closing her eyes when doing so. I don't know if she is having a bad time laying! I'm realy worried.... When I held her something sticky and white came out of her vent. Please help!!! She's eating but walks and moves slowly.

When you pick her up, carefully feel her abdomen. Is there an egg-sized lump there? By the sound of it, I wonder if she could be eggbound. That's just my guess.

This thread has a couple of suggestions, particularly posts # 2 and 4 (CAUTION - some pictures in post #2 that may be a little graphic)

These threads are specifically about quail:

She had trouble laying, but she finally did. No she seems very sick. Her abdomen seems like she already has another egg but without the shell. I have searched everywhere on the internet, but nothing seems like this case. I fisrt thought it was vent gleet, but the white substance is not pasty, it is like mucus or saliva-like. Everyrime I pick her up and she tries to brake free the white (and sometimes black) mucus comes out. Sometimes nothing comes out, only air.

Sorry to hear that she is still having problems. I'm wondering more now if she has an egg broken inside of her. That can be really dangerous, especially since she's so small and I'm not sure how you would be able to get it out

Is it possible to get a little tub of very warm water and let her soak to try and relax?

If she's still eating, you may want to see if you can get her to take some probiotics to help her system fight off any infection she might have going on. This thread talks more about it:

Good luck. Wish I could help more.
