She laid an egg and began pecking at it, then when I came back later on that day. She had completely consumed the entire egg, shell and all. Any suggestions to why she does this? Thanks.

She probably needs the calcium, and/or the protein. Bad thing is that once she has started, she probably will continue to do so. You might be able to break her, get some marbles to put in her cage, and make sure you take the eggs out as soon as you see them. She should peck at the marbles (thinking they are eggs) and decide that doesn't feel too hot. It should make her quit

I had this poblem with my buttons and my coturnix - we had to switch to a cheaper feed with less protein and it caused a mess with my quail

once I made the switch back to higher protein everything was fine I thought I would have to cull all my quail for being egg eaters - but they have stopped and I am getting all my eggs again

I never used the marbles or anything with mine - I was going to but by the time I got some all 10 buttons had stopped eating the eggs

Is your girl a young layer ?
