Buy as chicks or as eggs?

Actually, I think most ground nesting birds DO imprint, including chickens. From what I've read, the "window of opportunity" for imprinting is primarily in the first 3 days. This does not, however, mean you can't get them to "bond" with you and be "good pets" after that! Just means that some of the biological "hardwiring" to FOLLOW MOMMA, & stuff like that, changes.

Interestingly, I read that some imprinting (to sound) occurs while still in egg, late in incubation period.

All this having been said, day olds can still be made into "lap chickens", and in your situation - no roos- it may be best to get day old pullets only, in a breed that appeals to you (and can be sexed early on!!).
