So I am very new to this and I have gotten different advice on buying our chickens. We are wanting laying hens and I have been told by someone to get them at a chicken auction. Then I have had someone else tell me NO not to do this get them from an individual. That getting them from an auction and not one person will bring disease in. So as I really have no idea what to do I could use some advise. Plus which breed would be best for us. Thanks so much.

In my opinion unless you are experienced and know what you are doing NEVER buy birds at an auction. Sell them there, sure, but not to buy. Go with an individual. There at least you may have some recourse if things go badly wrong.

Welcome to BYC. Keep in mind there are people out there that will sell knowingly or unknowingly sick birds. You might be better off ordering chicks from a hatchery. You can order as little as 3 chicks from Meyer hatchery, sexed as well.

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

When you get birds at an auction you never really know what you are getting - including age, breed, and possible diseases and parasites. Raising chicks is fun and very rewarding.
