I just have a small flock of 8 hens and 1 rooster. Right now, 3 of them are broody. That means that I'm short 3 layers. Out of the remaining 5 hens (non-broody), only 2 lay just about every day. I've been toying with the idea of buying fertile eggs, either auction or through a company and setting them under a broody or two. Has anybody any advice/recommendations on where to buy them. I wanted to get my information together beforehand. The 3 broodies are at the bottom of the pecking order, so I plan to wait until a couple of the alphas go broody and use them to hatch the eggs.

I have had success with both receiving and shipping hatching eggs. I currently have bantam white faced black Spanish, Spangled Aseels, Light Brown Leghorns, and Black Sumatra hatching eggs for sale if you want to give it a shot or are interested in any of those breeds. I can post pics if interested

I would also suggest looking around on the NJ thread to see if you can find a BYC'er close to you that would be willing to sell you some eggs.

great thanks!

I have found that letting a "lower on the pecking order" hen hatch some chicks brings her up on the pecking order. She becomes more sure of herself when she is protecting her babies and everybody seems to knows it.
Good luck with your broodies.

That is a very interesting point. I have one hen that is acting like a broody, clucking and puffing up. If she does go broody I will get her some eggs to hatch! She could do with a boost in the pecking order as right now she is getting picked on. I don't know if it is because she is acting broody?
