Buying Hens,How do U tell if they,re still young enough to lay??

They aren't burying the eggs, unless your chickens have developed a new behavior I've never heard of before!
The dirt holes are for giving themselves a dust bath - it keeps parasites in check, helps release new feathers from the sheath, and just feels good!

I bought a couple of old BO hens with the idea of them going broody for me to hatch some eggs, but that hasn't happened, yet.

Anyway, one of their combs is small and the other almost has no comb, now, because my huge clumsy rooster uses the comb to balance himself and he has pulled the spikes off her. Ouch!

But, I kinda take my hat off to these old girls. They have been around the block, so to speak and I have to wonder just how many places they have been and how they were treated.

Yes, they have warmed up to me and will stand still when I come close and let me pet them. And sometimes when I'm out there doing something and go to turn around I better look down before taking a step, there will be one or several of the flock keeping me company. I am always flattered. LOL
