I'm trying to find good RIR's, I know many said that for my purposes of just wanting layers that I could just buy from hatchery and get some good layers that way. However, I would still like a nice looking bird and hopefully birds that are known to be friendlier?
In a perfect world every chicken I have would be friendly that I could give individual attention to and my son could get close to without me freaking out! lol But, I know it is not a perfect world, but I would like some better odds. All my animals are my "pets", Just so happens my chickens will provide a resource for us to eat. Hopefully this makes sense. I am realistic and realize a lot depends on the individual chicken, handling time, how they are treated etc.,.. But a lot has to do with genetics I believe as well. I don't plan to buy some an if not happy just sell them off, so I want to try to find the best place to order from first.

So, for those of you who purchased RIR hatching eggs, where did you purchase them from? How friendly are they? Pictures?
I've noticed some hatcheries are not so good about posting pics. I have been looking around on ebay and have pm'd one member here about her hatching eggs. I'm wanting some to be shipped mid-march, as I have silkies hopefully coming around this time so would like them to go in the bator around the same time.

I'm looking at Meyeres Hatchery for RIR's right now...just not sure and having trouble finding independent breeders who ship RIR Hatching eggs.

Have you tried Mr. Horstman, or Luckypickens? Both, will ship Rhode Island Red hatching eggs. Mr. Horstman has both rosecombs and single combs. Around here, rosecombs are desirable because of frostbite.

Thank you !
I've emailed luckypickens already with no reply and I just looked around on Mr. Horstman's website and emailed him as well :) I have never heard of him before.
He certainly has nice looking stock from what I can tell, I also might be interested in the Rose Combs he has instead of the single comb.

Received almost immediate reply from Horstman... Has anyone had any experience ordering any hatching eggs from him?
He is sold out of the Rose combs, but will have single combs available the weeks I need. He looks to have beautiful stock!

Off to search the forum...

(ETA) I found him on BYC and found his wonderful feedback. I will be sending out payment the beginning of next week to have hatching eggs sent the first or second week of March. I'm trying to coordinate now to have the silkie and rir eggs shipped hopefully in the same week!

Thanks again Rhoderunner! :)
