I just posted my pics of my nipple watering system. Look at the pics and notice the baby in one of them that is bent over not looking real well. I have about 400 chicks in a 17' by 4' brooder. I posted pictures in the post below showing my watering system. I raised a lot last year in the same place with no problems. Now this year my first batch of 500 chicks ( about 6 weeks ago) I lost a lot of them probably around 200. I have lost 80 in 2 days and they are only 4 days old. They were fine the first 2 days. I keep racking my brain trying to figure out what I am doing wrong.... Here are all the facts and changes from last year when I didnt have any problems:

1. Im using a different type of bedding. It is pine with larger flakes and not saw dust type. They are on a concrete floor with at least 2 inches of bedding. Same as years past with no problems just changed the bedding type. Last years bedding was from TSC. This years from a local feed store.
2. I just added the new nipple watering system this hatch but the last hatch 6 weeks ago they were using gallon waterers with a narrow lip and still died. They appear to be getting plenty of water but they were last time too.
3. I put a thermometer in different spots right under the light it is much warmer but away from the light it is 90 degrees or so. They dont appear to be too cold, cause I dont see them all bunched up together. They are spread out nicely like normal feeding and drinking fine.
4. I have large birds in 3 seperate pens running perpendicular to them and havent lost a single one of them so I dont thing I have a disease issue.
5. The last hatch when I was losing them just like this time..... When the birds were 5 weeks old they were ready to come off the light I moved them to the large pen beside them and they stopped dying after the second day and I havent lost one since. They are now 6 weeks old and doing fine.
6. The barn seems a little warm but the thermometer is reading temps that are in line with what I always do.
7. I cut off 2 lamps tonight to test and see if they are getting too hot. We shall see in the morning. Just hope they dont chill now. I work EMS and wont be able to return until Sunday at 7:30am.

I think I have covered everything. Anybody have any ideas???? Im down to thinking its the bedding or they are getting too hot. Im at a loss and cant figure out what has changed from last year when I had zero issues other than the normal loss of a few here and there out of 500 or so birds.

I hope your bedding is not cedar. Cedar is poison to chickens/quail. Are they piling up in a corner??

We are getting 1,000 1 day old BW quail next week, we brood them on rolled roofing, in a round pen so they don't pile up in the corners. Is the feed fine enough?? We buy game bird starter but we grind it in a food processor (I've burnt up 3) for the first week.

How about grinding up some boiled egg very fine and put in with their food for extra protein??

How old are they now??

Nope the shavings are pine. I dont grind up the feed. Im using the same feed I always have. Its a 28% made just for starting quail. The last hatch when they died I added vitimins to the water and that didnt help. I have never had to as the quality of the feed has always been great. They are no piling up in a corner. They act normal as far as temp goes. They are spread out, eating and drinking as normal. I dont think they need more protein than the feed they are getting considering they are at 28% now.

Some people say that pine can also be toxic. I don't have a problem with it, but others do.
If the pine is too hot and wet (humidity) this would probably make it sweat, releasing the oils that are toxic in it. I believe it is recommended to use kiln-dried pine shavings, but aspen is better. Other than that, I don't know. Is it possible they are aspirating on the water, since it is over their heads now?

This happened on my last hatch too, when I was using gallon waterers. My next step is to remove all the shavings and go back to my old kind and see if that fixes the problem. I just hate to have them die. I feel like its my fault and Im causing the problem, just dont know what the problem is.

I hate to have 1 or 2 die, I can't imagine losing 100+!!! I would think it's a combination of the pine shavings and the heat/humidity. I haven't had trouble with pine, but all my birds that use it are inside the house. Once they go outside they don't have any bedding.

Darn that stinks! I am sorry

Maybe there is a disease/parasite that was incubated with this hatch or brought in with the bedding?

Idk...I'm reaching here for reasons too.

I'm with you, clear out the bedding and see if that helps.

It's not your fault. You can't SEE particulates that may be harmful. You can't 100% be sure of the process of the bedding. You have to go by the label.

This is something that we ALL are endanger of.

I'm sorry for your loss

And best wishes to you...

Well I keep narrowing down the problem. I turned out 2 of the lights last night thinking that maybe they were getting to hot. This morning they were bunched up and a lot of dead ones again. I removed all the shavings and turned the 2 lights back on. I will know within a day or so if the shavings were killing them. If that is not the answer then im back to square one.

Maybe somehow you had some sort of unforseen contamination to the eggs that were put in the incubator and a disease reared its ugly head when the chicks hatched?? A contaminated yolk will kill chicks after they hatch.

Your situation stinks, you have to trouble shoot in a limited amount of time, not like figuring out an electric or plumbing problem, thats forsure. Keep us updated on how things are going and if you figured out what the problem is.

Best of luck.....................Jason
