Well it seemed like forever - but after finding 5 eggs over 5 days, under the roosting poles - My Blue Cochin Ella Fitzgerald finally laid an egg in my 5 gallon nesting bucket!!! I don't know who was more eggcited lol me or the other hens. While I was visiting the hen house Miss Ella went right in the flat backed bucket and settled down to "cluck" and lay an egg - the other 4 hens were very eggcited pacing back and forth in front of her clucking at her - their heads bobbing up and own and looking at Ella trying to figure out why she was on the nest LMAO - it cracked me up.

I am relieved that Ella fits in the bucket she is a big girl (or at least is very fluffy ) and fits in there very easily. Has anyone else have the other young hens in the flock be so curious when the older hens start to lay? have to tell you they were quite entertaining to watch!

Some of my pullets were very curious about the older hens laying. I remember one girl who used to just about stick her head under the laying hen to see what she's up to. Needless to say the layer didn't appreciate the attention LOL. Heard a lot of "Buzz off, can't you see I'm busy?" clucks coming from the hen house.

Hehe, we call it "chicken TV"! We had an open nesting box at first and only 2 of our 6 used it...the others laid them on the floor. When we got them into their new coop, we built two new boxes and put a roof over it...now they ALL use it. They seem to prefer dark and private :)
