We are not new to chickens. We have had chickens for 4 years. We tried 4 years ago to hatch our own, but did not have much success. The ones that did manage to hatch, didn't survive for very many hrs. We ended up buying some chicks. We provide the food, Our (now) 14 yr. old daughter has taken care of them. She does the chores and gets the $ from egg sales. We have gotten to know some of our customers who come to buy eggs. One of them comes 25 miles to buy our eggs! Another is a sales rep to my husband's buisness and comes 3 hrs. every other week to purchase all the eggs in the fridge. We have noticed that at holiday times, we always have a hard time keeping enough eggs in the fridge for our customers. Last year my husband wanted to start introducing the Buckeye Breed into our flock. This Spring we seperated out all the Buckeyes and started collecting eggs for incubation. We purchased a Little Giant Styrafoam Incubator and turner. Our first batch didn't do so well, but in our second batch, all hatched but 5. Of those 5, 1 was not fertile and 4 were full developed. So now we have lots of little Buckeye chicks. Today we will be starting one more batch in the incubator. Then I think we will be done hatching for this year. Hatching is kind of addicting!
