1. Tell us a bit more about yourself.

Well, I am the youngest in my family and have lived in the same area all my life. I road trips and travel, but I hate having to fly or boat places. When I was little, my family and I accidentally started raising rabbits. Our neighbors had a pair of rabbits they didn't take care of so we took them in. We didn't realize neither of them were fixed until they had babies. I have been blessed with very gracious parents that have let me own various animals from small lizards all the way to goats (although we weren't able to have goats very long).

2. Why and when did you start keeping chickens?

My family and I didn't grow up around farm life. I actually grew up in a small neighborhood where poultry and farm animals weren't really allowed. When I was about 13, we moved to a house with some property. At the same time, one of my mom's friends was moving into a small neighborhood where poultry wasn't allowed. The timing was just perfect and we adopted her small flock of about seven birds. My mom was actually scared of chickens we adopted them but quickly fell in love! The hens we got were pretty old and passed away, but we had already started getting more chickens by then. We currently have six hens and plan to get more in the spring.

3. Which aspect(s) of chicken keeping do you enjoy the most?

Other than free eggs, chickens are just goofy animals. I love watching them in the summer when we let them free range during the day. I love their awkward running when they chase bugs to eat.

4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?

We use to have a small leghorn hen named Alabama. She was very adventurous and oddly enough, got along really well with our barn cat. Out of all of them, she was probably my favorite. Ali (as I nick named her), was also calm and would let anyone hold her. I also hard a barred rock named Blue. She was just a sweet and gentle hen and I just fell in love with her.

5. What was the funniest (chicken related) thing(s) that happened to you in your years as chicken owner?

Ok, so, I use to have a mix-breed chicken we adopted from a school. The kindergarten class was studying how eggs develop but hadn't prepared homes for the birds when they hatched. Long story short, we took them home and all of them were great. Anyway, one of them we named her Delta. No matter what we did, we couldn't for the life of us keep her in the coop or yard! This chicken was basically Houdini.

6. Beside chickens, what other pets do you keep?

Outside of my chickens, I have dogs and cats. We have two cats and six dogs. I work with foster groups for dogs so we have them in and out sometimes. I also am a hobby dog musher, so hopefully that justifies how many dogs I have ;) :p
