@cherrynberry

Come say hello to cherrynberry! She's been a member since August 2020 and comes to us from California.

1. Tell us a bit more about yourself. And is there a story behind your member name?
Hello! :frow I live in CA, with my family of 5. I am also a deeply rooted Christian. Both my parents are engineers. My dad majored in EE and my mom is a hardware engineer. I have a brother and a sister. I am the "middle" child. I am currently a Freshman in high school and am homeschooled. Both my parents work from home too, so all in all, we stay home a lot. Maybe that is why I have so much time to have hobbies. Its funny when I think back on all the things I have done. I have joined sewing classes, pottery classes, painting classes (when I was really young), braiding classes (yes, that is a thing!), and many more art-related classes. I have made candles, and tried whittling as well. But for the most part, I like to draw animals. Outside of art, I really like to go on hikes, go biking, and take Kiki on walks. Kiki is my dog, aka the best dog in the world! I also like to read nonfiction, realistic fiction, and historical fiction books. Typically I say I hate fantasy books, but a good fantasy book is not totally unseen. I like playing several instruments (mainly stringed ones). I play violin, a type of harp, and the ukulele. I also used to play oboe for band, however, ever since I started focusing on playing competitively, I haven't been playing oboe as much. Now, I just do concerts every so often as well as try to get accepted into certain levels. I love almost every aspect of farming as well; giving meds, shots, weeding, participating in births, EVERYTHING. That's probably why I am interested in studying veterinary medicine or something of that sort, in the future. I also love taking photos! I mostly take photos for fun, but I have also won "mini" awards in school for photography. I took a class on that too, but ended up switching to wed design. I am glad to say that it was a great choice too! Web designing is so fun. Another thing about my family is that we move really often, mostly during the end of the calendar year. And I can say with all my heart that I enjoy living on large, rural lots, the most. And trust me, I have pretty much lived in EVERY type of home out there. Lastly, I have several favorite movies, including Knives Out, Sound of Music, and the Back to the Future series. Okay, I think I have said enough... 🤭

My username is cherrynberry and is derived from the names of two guinea pigs I used to own with my sister.

2. Why and when did you start keeping chickens?
Technically I got my first bird in 2016, but never really stuck with it until quarantine started.

3. Which aspects of poultry keeping do you enjoy the most?
I would say my FAVORITE part is to sit with them and read, basically enjoying their company. But honestly, I love a lot of things about them. I like collecting egg colors, studying their genetics, studying anatomy, and keeping them as pets. I also really love hands-on projects! And of course, I love the different varieties of chickens and such as well. I definitely don't see myself without chickens any time soon!

4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?
That would be Rosie! She is one of the first chickens I have had, and has been through quite a few incidences, including a hawk attack. One day, I was out taking a hike with my sister, just walking around the lot basically. We were calling the chickens from the end of their pen (on the opposite side of where the coop was), once we hiked around the back. However, none of the birds came. We were suspicious, but what we didn't know was that the chickens were being attacked right beneath our noses! My sister spotted the hawk first, and we quickly headed out to check on them. Unfortunately, we lost a Leghorn. And 2 birds, which included Rosie, were no where to be seen. I first closed the rest of the chickens in their coop, then, my sister and I searched for the missing two, but just couldn't find them. However, right when we thought we lost Rosie and Goldilocks, the two of them came out from INSIDE a hole! They literally rushed out of a hole dug by some sort of critter right in front of our eyes! That's the one time I actually didn't hate those ground squirrels.

I also want to give some love to Puffle, who is a special chicken of mine. Some people know about her, so I won't go into detail. She did, however, just start laying olive eggs as of recently!

5. What was the funniest poultry related thing that has happened to you in your years as an owner?
Okay...this is the story of Nugget, who is the first rooster I have ever had. Its not really funny, but it was a funny coincidence.

Okay, so shortly after we got a few RSLs, I fell in love and decided to get a few EE chicks. During this time, I decided to let my sister choose ONE special chick that she gets to care for, spend more time with, and such. So right when they came in the mail, she was excited to choose a "special" chick. She was hopping between boats, but quickly decided on a small, striped chick. My sister decided to name her Nugget, and so, "her" story began. As she grew, we slowly realized something was off about "her". To be honest, I had a BAD feeling, but didn't want to hurt my sister's feelings by telling her that her one "special" chick was actually a male. But lo and behold, he turned out to be the only male in the group! It remained that way for a year until we decided to hatch a few of his offspring. Technically, Nugget is also the reason why my parents decided to invest in a few agricultural lots, which they have never done prior to that! I didn't want to end this on a bad note, but I feel prompted to say that Nugget is no longer with us, as of the last day of 2021. And yes, it was a pre-set date. Nugget has been with us at 3 different houses and he is not even 2 years old! Goodbye Nugget! As much as I hate you for attacking me, you will always be special, and your legend lives on! :yesss:

6. Beside poultry, what other pets do you keep?
Just 3 dogs. A BC, a Husky mix, and a terrier mix. We have a large, medium, and small. The BC is Auggie, the Husky mix is Snow, and Kiki is the terrier mix. My favorite is Kiki, since I take care of her for the majority of the time. She is easy to bring on hikes and is overall great with recall and such. BUT, she is also the most picky eater of the three. Auggie and Snow mostly stay with my sister. The BC is into agility. He is overall really sweet too. Snow knows a few tricks, but she loves to go on runs and hikes the most. She is the perfect pal to hike with, and can go miles without wanting to stop.

We are also planning to get a few shoats and goats. Funny how that rhymes 🤣

7. Anything you'd like to add?

I truly enjoyed your interview.

ETA: You said you've moved a lot... Grant it I'm old but how's this.... Grew up in Indiana just outside of Chicago, moved to Texas, then Colorado, North Carolina, Germany (while in Germany I spent a year in Spain), Texas, Illinois, Louisiana, Korea, Japan, Florida, DC and then Tennessee....

Definitely not THAT much! I have only moved out of state once. Otherwise, we just stick to CA.

I moved twice before I was in 3rd grade, so it doesn't really count. Then, when I was done with 3rd grade, I moved out of state for 2.5 years. During those two and a half years, I moved 3 times. Then, I moved back, but then moved again shortly after that. We moved into an apartment this time. This is when My parents got us our two gunea pigs, Cherry and Berry. Then, just a year later, we moved into a rental property. Just a year later, we moved again, because my parent's don't like rentals (for many reasons). After living there for another year, I was pretty much done with 7th grade. Thats also when "covid" hit. During quarantine, we got chickens again, and Nugget was discovered. Shortly after he started crowing, my parents bought an agricultural lot. So we moved alll our birds there and settled down...for another year. But after a while, we found out that it would be easier if the property had more fenced in areas and barns. So another year later, my parents bought the house I live in now. We just got the keys about a month ago and thats where the story takes me. Its not THAT hard for me, its probably harder for my parents. Constantly dealing with renting out properties and loans. Its actually quite fun helping my dad set things up for rentals. Its a good experience, all in all, except for than one year when we lived in an apartment. That was awful, especially for a family of five. The only houses they sold was a condo and townhome that I lived in when I was younger. My dad used to go on buisness trips really often and he always told me about Colorado. I wish to go there one day. Hopefully before school gets tight.
