BYC Member Interview - My Very First 6 Chickens

@My Very First 6 Chickens

Come say hello to Jen who comes to us from Connecticut and has been a member since May 2021.

Hello from Connecticut, I'm Jen and back in May 2021, we brought home my very first 6 chickens! I had not a day experience and one thing was certain; I was gonna do everything I could to make their lives the best I could! (ahhh, ignorance is bliss)....My first lesson was learned immediately when I quickly learned that one should always have a coop ready BEFORE the chicks come home! Other than that, I was determined to learn chicken behavior and how best to care for my new friends. We moved our girls from a playpen in the house to a 160sq.ft run.

We made the decision to get chickens for fresh eggs. Fast forward 3 years and I would never guess the impact these hens have had on me and hubbies life.

I love ALL aspects of chicken keeping. Except constantly avoiding all the monsters that want to eat them! I really do love it all tho... I need a teeshirt that reads: "I'd rather be cleaning the coop"!! Free ranging is something I have done every single day since I got these gals and I'm proud to say I can easily muster them in any direction by simply outstretching & moving my arms in the direction I want them to go. Voice tone is everything and I love how my top hen Delicious can mimic me. We love to play 'scratchy doo for hide & seek' and in the fall make piles of dry leaves to scratch through.

In the summer of 2023 I took in 2 sweet, 18month old, little hens I named Golden Chicken & Spicy tuna.

As of July 24th they finally have their own proper coop and everyone is safe & awesome. A heartwarming story is the first night with me; Spicy tuna outstreched her wing and little golden chicken nestled right up under it. Spicy is funny. She will take a little treat....make a little noise to get golden chickens attention and when golden comes, she grabs the treat, never lifting her head, and circles around & places it down. Golden chicken will again go for the treat and spicy will again pick it up, never lift her head and turn again. She does a full circle! Its so funny. I have seen her take a treat and drop in in front of golden chicken to share all the while making the cutest little noises.

Hey BYC! Thank you! I have definitely come a long way from my first post asking about pasty butt in baby chicks. I will always say I have BYC to thank for my thriving Flock of 7!

Thanks Sally! what a cool thing to be recognized! Is it obvious I’m obsessed with my chickens? and your chickens, and their chickens too! I love them all and I get to enjoy them more knowing I have BYC to turn to for real, dignified help. Will you show me a pic of your chickens now?! 😍🐓❤️ :wee :highfive:
