Come say hello to Noah! He's been a member since June 2023 and comes to us from Florida.

1. Tell us a bit more about yourself. And is there a story behind your member name?
I live in Florida. I wouldn’t say I’m a homesteader yet, but one day I plan to be completely self-sufficient, hopefully getting some land soon. My name is Noah, but I go by Pat or whatever you want to call me on here.

There is actually a really simple story behind my name. I was keeping Coturnix quail on my porch/patio, and I’m normally awful at coming up with names, so I was looking for the simplest name I could, and I came up with patiocoturnix.

2. Why and when did you start keeping poultry?
I started keeping poultry about 2 years ago. I started keeping poultry because of the fresh eggs and meat quail produce. I started with quail because I live in an apartment and chicken keeping is not able to be done in an apartment, so basically an introduction to poultry.

3. Which aspects of poultry keeping do you enjoy the most?
I enjoyed the colors and personality’s of my coveys. But I really enjoy most of keeping poultry the only thing I didn’t like is how messy the quail were I was constantly cleaning.

4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?
I had a quail named Sheldon. He/she (never laid an egg or produced the foam) developed a serious wry neck around 2-3 days old, and he lived an almost normal life eating, drinking, and playing with his covey. He was one of my favorites. Chicken comes in at a close second as he had my favorite colors and was my first rooster.

5. What was the funniest poultry related thing that has happened to you in your years as an owner?
I always changed their water 2-3 times a day, but every time I put in or took out the waterer, they would always jump at it and try to eat it.

6. Beside poultry, what other pets do you keep?
I keep 2 cockatiels, 2 dogs, and 2 cats.
The cockatiels are Stitch (unknown age) and Trooper (8 months). The dogs are fortissimo mo for short (7) and Marley (2), and the cats are Romeo (1.5) and Buttercup (7).

7. Anything you'd like to add?
I’d like to thank BYC for the chance to do this interview and the members for reading.

Time for pictures. I somehow have no pictures of Marley. I also have no quail pictures.

Nice interview @Patiocoturnix! Quail are a super fun species to keep, I've kept both chickens and quail and part of me thinks if I had to chose between the two to keep, I would probably chose the quail!

Love your photos, Cockatiels are also enjoyable to keep too, yours are pretty! ❤️ They live a long time, I lost my last bird a few years ago, "Peep" was nearly 20 years old!

Thanks for sharing yourself with us! 😊
