Come say hello to Sophia who has been a member since March 2024 and comes to us from Michigan.
1. Tell us a bit more about yourself. And is there a story behind your member name?
Hi! I'm talkinboutchickens, but Sophia is my real name. I didn't want to do a classic, or "original" username, because I want people to remember my name. The main reason I chose "talkinboutchickens" is because my family tells me that I quite literally talk about chickens too much and they are basically sick of listening to me

I live in Southeast Michigan. I love my state so much, if you don't already live in Michigan I really encourage you to put it on your bucket list.
Music is another big part of my life! I love it so much! I love k-pop, bbno$, d4vd, Chappell Roan, Lainey Wilson, Morgan Wallen, and some other random stuff.
I also love watching Lions football. In my lifetime I want to see them win the Superbowl.
2. Why and when did you start keeping poultry?
I got my first chicks in May of 2020, so I have been keeping chickens for 5 years now. I have three left out of eight from my original batch.
To be honest I didn't expect that having chickens would be so fun! I was just like, okay my parents want chickens and they lay eggs and they are cute so that's cool

I wish everyone knows how cool chickens are, and I wish everyone gets to experience being around them. Because chickens are SO underrated.
3. Which aspects of poultry keeping do you enjoy the most?
They are just so silly and goofy, I love their personalities so much. They have learned to hop in the car in search of crumbs on the ground or sunflower seeds (my dad snacks on them sometimes.) But they never poop in there so that's good.
They can be very naughty and get into things like plastic garbage bags (filled with garbage) and styrofoam. They are very affectionate in their own way once you get to know them. They each have their own unique voice, too, and I only have to hear their voice in order to know who is who...Phyllis has a gentle and whispery voice but also screams sometimes. Dottie has a deep and raspy voice. And also screams a lot. Rose has long and loud cheeps. Their eggs sure are good but I think I like the chickens and their personalities more.
I also LOVE hatching eggs. I've only done it once so far but hopefully I can do it next year!

4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?
Ok, so I usually feel bad saying who my favorite is...But I love my boy Ledo so much, he is so cuddly and such a jolly little boy 24/7!!
Then Agnes, she passed away in 2024. She ran up to me whenever I went outside with so much excitement! She was so fast. Her voice was so adorable. Phyllis is such a loving girl, she grooms my hair. Except she is broody ALL THE TIME.
Vicky who died in 2023 had the cutest bond with my black sexlink Winnie. And Gert who just passed around 2 months ago, she loved to help my mom garden because she would always get the bugs. She also always used to jump up on my back.
Okay, now I'm just starting to list everyone. The truth is, I love every one of my past and present chickens equally. Some hate me, some like me but I love them all!
5. What was the funniest poultry related thing that has happened to you in your years as an owner?
When I was chasing Winnie around the yard trying to rescue the frog she was running around with...I saw the frog's desperate little eyes and then I was never able to save him

6. Beside poultry, what other pets do you keep?
1. German shorthaired pointer named Pearl, 5 years old
2. Bullmastiff named Drax, almost 2
3. Cat named Obi, around 10
4. Goldfish named Goldie, about 11
5. Danio fish named Findis, about 11
6. Danio fish named Mang, unknown age
7. Marcel, Shelldon, and Peter the snails
8. I would love to get geese next year but I'm not sure if parents are on board.

7. Anything you'd like to add?
Sure, my other hobbies include raising caterpillars into butterflies, Dungeons & Dragons, and volunteering at several places. I am also employed at a petting farm and I am in love with the goats. Especially this lamancha goat named Axel. Apparently he has chronic allergies.
One more thing to add to my "beg parents to get" list! GOATS!

Also, pics of my most recent chicks: Aretha, Myrtle, Dan (named after both the head coach Dan Campbell of the Lions and Dan Skipper of the Lions hehe), and Mabel.

Also just want to thank everyone for always being so kind and helpful on this forum.
