BYC's 2025 Spooktacular Halloween Hatch-Along

Pics
I lost the chick that had a difficult hatch. :hugs
No pip, no sounds. Today I actually cracked and peeled the outer shell of the air cell on 17 the silkie egg that was alive but stopped moving. I poked at the fully formed chick inside and it never budged even once. That explains why it hasn't made any progress in the last 2 days. Somehow it died.
I'm sorry guys its sad when these things happen.:hugs

Haven't kept up with the thread, sorry. I candled last week after two eggs went bad (1 zombie, 1 fibrorudd) and two of the mosaics didn't develop, as well as the cracked svarthona died. The rest seem to be doing well. I have a hen who went broody so I put the eggs under her so she can raise them. Hoping to see little fluff balls running around in a day or so. Now I just have to chick proof the fence. Haha

Does anyone have some safe treat suggestions for 5-7 day old chicks? Maybe some blended veggies with grit?

I'm asking because I started treats way way too late in my 6 week olds and they are still skittish and scared of me.
If you feed them anything other than crumbles they need chick grit first. There is one exception though, cooked egg, mine go nuts for it and it gives them a nutritional boost.

Edit: You can also bring in bits of soil, grass, and leaves for them to play with. It'll help them build a natural immunity to microbes in the soil. I bring some in every few days.

I never really handle my chicks beyond catching and looking at them for any problems. I always start them on scrambled eggs their first week. It can take a few days for them to develop a taste for them, but after that they go nuts for them and come running for them. They way to a chickens heart is through the stomach.
