To be fair, panthers are also called mountain lions (and cougars, pumas, catamounts).

But they aren't pink!

In the original Pink Panther film (1963) "Pink Panther" is the name of a pink diamond that has a flaw that looks like a springing panther when held up to the light.

The animated panther character in the title credits was so popular that United Artists signed him to a multi-year contact.

Henry Mancini is of course the composer of the iconic theme song. Here's the original title credits sequence for anyone interested (it's funny)! Check out his cigarette holder.


I had to look all that up (except the Henry Mancini part).
