Hard to say how long it took. 🤔 I began wearing it long at 16 and over the years I learned ways of protecting it to allow it to grow longer and longer. There are points where it breaks so you have to protect it. From shoulder length to waist probably took the longest but from waist to hip to knee ... maybe about 8 years.
How did you keep yours from breaking? Mine is at the small of my back and just gets a mess from sitting again the couch, car seat, etc. i try to keep it up or braided but dont always have hairbands. My son is trying to beat me i think 🤣
thats where most of my hairbands go. We both stopped getting haircuts during covid.

Chicken doo do, too.
Forgot to say: I grew up in a city and ran barefoot all the time. Got married, moved out to the country and would never go outside in bare feet! Hazards everywhere, some of them quite painful.

Do you mean hair ties? Would he wear pastel ones? Get you some in girly colors, maybe he'll leave those alone!

I always kept my hair in a long pony down my back with several hair ties down its length. But protecting it at night is the key, or at least it was for me. I'd put it in a knee-high nylon,* and that kept it from getting broken at night. Once I started doing that it grew so much faster!

*Put the nylon on one arm. Tie hair in a pony with just one hair tie at the top. Grasp pony near head with the hand eearing the nylon. With the other hand, pull the nylon down over the pony to completely encase it, then close top of nylon with another hair tie. Hair will probably fold, that's okay.

re: hair ties. If you're going to use regular ties, be sure they are fabric-wrapped, don't just use rubber bsnds. But to really avoid damaging hair, I recommend using hair ties with two marble-sized balls on them. These go AROUND your hair, instead of you having to drag your hair through them like normal hair ties, so are far less damaging to your hair. If walmart doesn't have them check your local Sally's or other beauty supply store.

When I was about 8, my hair went to my lower back, and then my Mom and Gramma cut it for the first time. I am trying to grow it back again

Never had a haircut till I was 8 Folks took me from Grandma to move out here hair was cut in Bob style cried for long time.
Just past the bra now down the back.
That's where it's most likely to seem to "stop growing." What actually happens is it keeps getting broken in our sleep. Braid it at night, that'll help. But not tightly or it will break at every .... "joint" in the braid.

I keep my hair long, too, (just mid-back) and this is great advice. I never thought of the nylon, that's such a clever idea!

At night I braid my hair and work a few drops of jojoba oil into the last 3-6 inches, then I wrap that in Saran wrap and secure it with a pony tail holder. That keeps it moisturized and protected. The ends of my hair are always the driest and most easily damaged.

A satin pillowcase protects the hair around your head because it doesn't grab and pull on it like other fabrics. It protects the skin on your face, too.

If you have hard water and you don't have a whole house filtration system you can get a filter that attaches to just your showerhead. It's better for your hair and your skin.

I don't know if you've ever tried them, but I've found hair sticks work really well for me. I have a ton of really fine hair, so keeping it up without breaking is a challenge. Hair clips never worked as they just slide right out the moment I start moving and with hair ties I would have to have so tight I was risking breaking them to keep my hair up.
I finally switched to using hair sticks this summer, and I think I'll be sticking with them. Once you get the motions down, they hold your hair up really well. I had no issues with it falling out while working at a greenhouse or hiking. An added benefit is that any stick shaped object will work in a pinch.
