Bye bye hens... what to do now?

Ha ha. funny smell. Sod is so expensive though! I don't even put it in my yard let alone in my chicken yard. But if I could find that special grass or weed... I would invest some! Especially if I knew it would last! If anybody knows what that is.. I'll see if I can find it!
Thanks for the grass suggestions. Maybe I could throw some gravel out there. or something to make it less dusty!

I keep mine in the run most of the day and let them free range when I get home from work.

I have a gun handy incase a preditor shows up.

So far this has worked quite well for me and my flock.

I would think you could easily find some hens locally. Have you tried your local craigslist or backpage. Even if you post a "looking for" ad, Im sure someone somewhere is overloaded with hens! I know I am!

do you have a local feed store that sells chicks?
we do and when i told the lady i wanted like four month old chickens i could just let out in the pen we built and not have a light etc. on them. she gave me the name and number of a guy who raises chickens. he sold me however many i wanted and gave me a roo free.
we paid like $ 4 a chicken. which i did not think was to bad. since at the store the such young chicks were over a $1 a piece or more.

or what about your newspaper for chickens for sale or american classifieds. they have a website online. and people are always selling animals in them too.

and for the grass couldn't you build something square and staple small wire across and let them eat the grass from that. i found that in a magazine. i want to build that so they can have the grass grow in there and not be able to "eat it all gone" and it still grow.

sorry for your loss and just tryint to help with some ideas :aww

Y'all are mean.

My chicken yard is on the edge of the woods and this PLANT grows on the edge of the woods. I'm going to look it up and see what type of PLANT it is.

Just make sure you ask about their cultivation methods - some sod farms use huge amounts of pesticides, fungicides and herbicides.
I dig up clods of sod from fields - then they come laden with bugs and worms. Yummy!

Great Idea! I'll go to my feed store! I figure that they only sold babies but surely they have connections! Lol. It is a small country town. Geesh. Thanks all! I'll go to craigslist too!

Anyone remember Chiapet? I wonder if those things would work well for the chicks..they were pretty inexpensive if I remember correctly....

i know a hatchery where you can get full grown for cheap. i got mine there.
Pinewood Hatchery
idk if there is a min. b/c i got them from my feed store (they order huge numbers of them all diff. breeds)
hope you find some!
id keep them in the pen.. just let them out when you are watching. sorry about your losses.
you could buy some sod and throw it in with the chickens.. grow some plants in there etc.
