"In areas where iodine deficiency is known to exist or birds are fed goitrogenic substances, iodine supplementation is recommended. Providing one drop of dilute Lugol's solution in 1 oz. of fresh drinking water once a week is the suggested preventative."
Will the iodine we buy to put on cuts work?
"Feeds containing goitrogenic agents include soybean, flax, rapeseed, kale, cabbage, broccoli, and turnips. Septicemic diseases with an acute onset may affect the thyroid glands causing inflammation and hyperplasia. Exposure to toxic levels of organosphosphates or chlorinated biphenols may also result in enlargement and hyperplasia of the glands."
How much cabbage would be needed to reach toxic levels?
I am interested since I get some cabbage from the local markets for free that I feed to my chickens.
Okay thanks honey bunny. They get their main feed every day but the cabbage and other vegies i get for free varies from day to day so i guess i will be alright.Tons of cabbage! Your chickens will probably be fine, as long as their main diet still consists of their feed.
