Cabbage Treat

Interesting. I had to make kraut today as the basketball sized heads were starting to split in the garden. tossed in the leaves from the outside of the heads and the cores and it does not look like they touched em all day. Will see!

There are no unwanted crawlie things to a chicken. Except maybe a large snake or Komoto dragon or an alligator or a crocodile........Well maybe there are a few.

I'm so confused!

In some BYC posts , cabbage is a no no and toxic to chickens or it can "flavor" the eggs. I love giving my girls treats but want to make sure I don't accidentally kill them. What's the real story???

If it were very toxic, there would be a lot of dead chickens -- people do this all the time. They hang one in the coop in winter when weather is too bad for the chickens to go out.

Do you just serve the whole head or do you cut it up?
I have cut them up for my silkies but what a joy it would be if I did not have to do that. lol

Drive a knife in making an"X" cut, and fluff the leaves a little by banging the core on a flat surface. Then hang the head by a string on a hook. Have it about 18" off the floor, so the chickens have to jump of a bit to peck at it.

I took my cordless drill and drilled a screw right down the core and strung it up with cord. I do this with ears of corn too. takes them all day to eat the corn because it swings. Gives them something to do, otherwise they have the corn gone in a flash.
