Davaroo not to sound stupid or anything.. do you after making the partial x cut and fluff the leaves you hang it upside down correct from the part you did not cut through?
Thanks what a great idea. I stand for hours cutting them up in small pieces for silkies to only have it gone in a matter of minutes ~sigh~ now they have to work at it. woohoo.

I cut my cabbage up too! Guess now I can save a little labor. Mine seem to like the inside of squash and cucumbers too, so I cut them in half so they can get to the insides. DH says I spoil them as rotten as I spoil him and the dog. I usually leave the "shells" in for a day or so and then collect them and toss them in the compost heap.

I also found out my older girls like blueberries and blackberries that I've left in the fridge too long to eat myself. And my buff orpington hen seems to like little garden snakes! She's found and eaten a few of them lately. Pecks at 'em for a while, then swallows them whole.
