I keep the off-duty rooster in a "rooster rotater" - just a circle of 6-foot dogwire with chicken wire across the top, a big stick through one side for a perch, and a couple of milk jugs with the sides cut out for food and water. The hens can reach though the wire, and the chicks walk in to eat with him. (Awwww!) It's inside the fenced run, with a dog patrolling outside.

They have to be rotated because we only have 11 hens, and a lot of them are bald from rooster attention. I hope I can raise enough chicks to have more hens next year, so both roosters can be out.

I'm toying with the idea of building a Maternity Ward. That is, using free pallets 3X4 to build six individual, but interconnecting coops for sitting hens and hens with chicks. The roosters could go into one of those and any Free Rangers would go in them for the Winter, because wintering over is serious business in Alaska. It seems like there's always a chicken who needs an individual coop/run at different times for different reasons too, like injuries.
