Cairn Terriers....

Thanks everyone.

Featherfooted, I LOVE the pic of your Cairn!!!
One of the good things is that I have heard they are very like Westies in temperment and such. We have an ancient westie so maybe that has prepared us a bit....it took some time but he ended up being good with any sort of critters we brought in, all you had to do was say "Be Nice!!!". As a very young dog he was hell on wheels and would still give many other dogs a run for their money, lol.
So, this could be a good thing.
Toto was a Cairn? Well, she does have that look though a sandy color instead of dark.

When we went to the breeder to pick out a puppy she had both the darker color and the wheaten. I knew I wanted a male so that narrowed it down and Herbie really picked me. He came up to me as I sat on the floor and would not leave, all the other ones ran off to see everyone else. He's been my buddy ever since.

Cairns and Westies come from the same breed! The white coloration was bred out of the Cairns and that is where the West Highland White breed originates from (so I've read). Also, Cairn's hair (hair not fur) color can constantly change throughout their lifetimes! It's very cool actually. My five year old started out black and brown (slightly brindle), and is now black and grey. Recently he has started getting some more reddish brindle coming through again. My brothers' Cairn started out wheaten, and is now dark/almost black! The breed is supposed to be high-energy, high-prey drive, etc., however, ours is the exact opposite. He is lazy, quiet (only barks when scared or necessary), and is mocked by squirrels. We are getting chicks from my mom (also an owner of a few Cairns) next week, so I am hoping he will become accustomed to them! Cannot wait!
